Several sites are reporting that 55% of Al Jazeera stock was purchased by...
*drum roll please*
"Sajeeda", Saddam's wife and their daughters.
Check out Ladybird at Baghdad Dweller. The two sites she points to are in Arabic so I cannot confirm the information. Of course, even though I respect Ladybird and other fellow Iraqi bloggers, it's not being reported by any major news sites, so take it with a grain of salt.
Also read Iraqi Expat.
Neither Iraqi is acting amazed. Both are of the opinion that AJ was "Saddam's mouthpiece anyway".
Big Update:
From comments, Twosret points out that it's not purchased yet, just that Sajid Hussein is making inquiries through an off shore company.
Keep your eyes peeled.

There's a shocker.
Whaddaya wanna bet this will NEVER make the MSM headlines?
Ever?
I would take those reports with a grain of salt too. The only connection between Saddam's wife Sajida and Al-Jazeera is that they're both in Qatar, which is the only Arab state not criticized by AJ since Qatar is a big shareholder.
Kat,
I read the sources in arabic. Non of them confirmed that she did buy any shares yet. She is bidding through a company that is all.
I don't agree with all what Al-Jazeera air but I wish they had an english version for you guys to see everything on Al-Jazeera not just the cut and paste happening.
I would hate to see it going to the hands of Saddam's wife that will be very sad and I will for sure not pay a penny for it.
Okay, but is this confirmed? I want to tell Kurds, but if I repeat this and it's not true, then they may do something regrettable (I know I would). Do you know there is a blog called Al Jazeera vs. Kurds? LOL!
Anyway, I wanted to stop by and tell you that I had a graduate international economics course this past spring, and I did my thesis on the economy of Iraqi Kurdistan. I want you to know that I broke all the rules and put your T.E. Lawrence quote at the top of my paper (definately not something you do in business school lol) but I could not help it. When I handed my professor my paper, I actually held it out in front of me with both hands and bowed as I gave it to him...I have no idea why I did that. The Chinese and Taiwanese students in my class told me I was acting like them.
I felt like I was handing something so dear to me, so precious, filled with so much love over to my professor that the bow was just natural. The quote was just fitting. I've worked so hard, with my whole heart in it, to learn as much as I can so I can teach it to young Kurds and improve the world.
"I loved you, so I drew these tides of men into my hands and wrote my will across the sky in stars to earn you Freedom"
This is how I feel, though the people for whom I try to move heaven and earth are Kurdish and not the Arabs of Lawrence, I still feel exactly this way.
Thank you Kat...thank you for being such an inspiration!
PS: I earned an A!
Twosret..thanks for the information, i will post an update ASAP.
Emmunah, if you come back to read, see Twosret's comments. Not purchased yet, but bidding on it. Scary enough, either way.
And, I am so happy to have inspired you and that you got an A. That is fantastic! I know you will be a great benefit to the Kurdish people. I have great hopes that their success will be the example to the rest of Iraq.
Freedom is a grand thing, it gives us the chance to have hopes and dreams, even in the darkest hours.
Keep up the great work.
